Yes, I know it is March and I am the professional prcastinator here but! Welcome to the January Daring Baker's Challenge entry. OI!
Let me tell you, January's was a doozie.
Francijn of Koken in de Brouwerij was our January 2013 Daring Bakers Hostess and she challenged us to make the traditional Dutch pastry, Gevulde Speculaas from scratch! That includes making our own spice mix, almond paste and dough! Delicious!
I set out to do this baby on time and then ended up doing part one of 3 the day it's supposed to be posted.
But i digress.
First things first, the speculaas has its own special spice mix.
this smells delicious. It reminded me of the super spice cake at a local bakery and chai mixed together.
Next step is to make the paste that will fill the Speculaas
oooo ahhhh almonds! Oh, if you have any nut allergies, this is not the baked good for you.
but if you enjoy them, loverly!
finally i got to the day in which I made the dough. then subsequently got the dough stuck everywhere, then unstuck it, and figured out hwo to get it all in my pan and finally baked.
never did get a picture of it once it was broken up. we went the super casual route and just broke hunks off as we ate it.
it was quite tasty despite its odd appearance.
