Have you ever seen those pretty little checkerboard cakes covered in glistening fondant or marzipan in those fancy glass dessert cases? I always thought they looked like a grown up petit four.
Actually, they're called Battenburg Cakes.
How do I know that?
came to our rescue last minute to present us with the Battenberg Cake challenge! She highlighted Mary Berrys techniques and recipes to allow us to create this unique little cake with ease.
I decided not to attempt any fancy flavorings and stuck to the basic recipe.
I did decide I'd change up the color nad made mine part purple and part whatever color you want to call it naturally. It's Relay time so purple was perfect.
The cake itself was pretty simple and it was deifnitly delicious.
See pictures below:
Marzipan
pan all ready to divde up the cake batter
the batter after much stirring
loaded up in the oven ready to go
it took just the right amoutn of blue and red to make hte purple batter and i was covered in the red
all baked and looking lovely
smelled divine too.
the plan half came out beatuiful
while the purple one sunk
getting it to stack up was fun..i used strawberry preserves
had i not been coveredin powerderd sugar i would have chronicled hte hilarity that was rolling out marzipan and then covering the cake.
it ended up a little lopsided but it was SO GOOD>
and bonus! i took it to my Auntie's for her birthday and she loved it!
